With a population of nearly 50 million individuals, Ukraine is one of the biggest nations in Eastern Europe. It is a country with a respectable history and quite strong in tradition. Many foreigners may not understand that this culture is one of the most open in all of Europe with citizens who pleasantly welcome visitors into their homes.

The people from Ukraine come from a traditional village type of culture so depending upon which generation they come from they live their lives differently. According to the old time customs, females worked in the house while men pursued vocations outside the house. Back then, grandparents often stayed with the family to help raise the children. While today's life is a bit different from the old days, Ukrainians adore their families and children especially.

Given these powerful family bonds, it makes sense that in Ukraine there would be a real emphasis on enjoying meal time together. There are many different varieties of food that are enjoyed in this land, among them are: cucumbers, peaches, tomatoes, lettuce, beets, grapes and apples. All of these fruits and vegetables are farmed in Ukraine because it is a very fertile region of the world that is ideal for farming. Whole milk, butter and sour cream are also significant aspects of a proper Ukrainian diet. However, it must be said that salo (which is a word meaning "pork fat") is a very important food in this culture due to the fact that it is one of the foods which does not make those at high altitudes ill. Since Ukraine has plenty of mountains, this is a treasured type of food.

Lastly, and perhaps most of all, bread is a truly important food in Ukraine culture. The vast fields of wheat cultivated in this nation are legendary and so bread has become a symbol of this nation and its ability to provide for its citizens. A loaf of bread with salt on top is often offered to guests. Even at weddings, bread is sometimes favored over cake because it represents the home and a prosperous new life.

One thing you can know absolutely about Ukrainian people is that they may not draw attention to themselves on the streets, but they also do not run from expressing their hearts. If a person in this nation likes or dislikes you, you will know. This is perhaps the strongest tradition of Ukrainian people: the respectfulness to be expressive and honest about how one is feeling.
